The Dangerous Book For Boys By Hal Iggulden

The Dangerous Book For Boys By Hal Iggulden
Why Buy A The Dangerous Book For Boys By Hal Iggulden?
Equal parts droll and gorgeous nostalgia book and heartfelt plea for a renewed sense of adventure in the lives of boys and men, Conn and Hal Igguldens The Dangerous Book for Boys became a mammoth bestseller in the United Kingdom in 2006. Adapted, in moderation, for American customs in this edition (cricket is gone, rugby remains; conkers are out, Navajo Code Talkers in), The Dangerous Book is a guide book for dads as well as their sons, as a reminder of lore and technique that have not yet been completely lost to the digital age. Recall the adventures of Scott of the Antarctic and the Battle of the Somme, relearn how to palm a coin, tan a skin, and, most charmingly, wrap a package in brown paper and string. The books ambitions are both modest and winningly optimistic: you get the sense that by learning how to place a splint or write in invisible ink, a boy might be prepared for anything, even girls (which warrant a small but wise chapter of their own). Questions for Conn Iggulden

Conn and Hal Iggulden are two brothers who have not forgotten what it was like to be boys. Conn taught for many years before becoming one of the most admired and popular young historical novelists with his Emperor series, based on the life of Julius Caesar, and his newly embarked series on Genghis Khan, while Hal is a theater director. We asked Conn about their collaboration.

Amazon.com: Its difficult to describe what a phenomenon The Dangerous Book for Boys was in the UK last year. When I would check the bestseller list on our sister site, Amazon.co.uk, there would be, along with your book, which spent much of the year at the top of the list, a half-dozen apparent knockoff books of similar boy knowledge. Clearly, you tapped into something big. What do you think it was?

Iggulden: In a word, fathers. I am one myself and I think weve become aware that the whole health and safety overprotective culture isnt doing our sons any favors. Boys need to learn about risk. They need to fall off things occasionally, or–and this is the important bit–theyll take worse risks on their own. If we do away with challenging playgrounds and cancel school trips for fear of being sued, we dont end up with safer boys–we end up with them walking on train tracks. In the long run, its not safe at all to keep our boys in the house with a Playstation. Its not good for their health or their safety.

You only have to push a boy on a swing to see how much enjoys the thrill of danger. Its hard-wired. Remove any opportunity to test his courage and theyll find ways to test themselves that will be seriously dangerous for everyone around them. I think of it like playing the lottery–someone has to say Look, you wont win–and your children wont be hurt. Relax. It wont be you.

I think thats the core of the books success. It isnt just a collection of things to do. The heroic stories alone are something we havent had for too long. It isnt about climbing Everest, but it is an attitude, a philosophy for fathers and sons. Our institutions are too wrapped up in terror over being sued–so we have to do things with them ourselves. This book isnt a bad place to start.

As for knockoff books–great. Theyll give my son something to read that doesnt involve him learning a dull moral lesson of some kind–just enjoying an adventure or learning skills and crafts so that he has a feeling of competence and confidence–just as we have.

Amazon.com: You made some changes for the U.S. edition, and I for one am sorry that you have removed the section on conkers, if only because its such a lovely and mysterious word. What are (or what is) conkers?

Iggulden: Horse chestnuts strung on a shoelace and knocked against one another until they shatter. In the entire history of the world, no one has ever been hurt by a conker, but its still been banned by some British schools, just in case. Another school banned paper airplanes. Honestly, its enough to make you weep, if I did that sort of thing, which I try not to. Reading Jane Austen is still allowed, however.

Amazon.com: What knowledge did you decide was important to add for American boys? I notice in both editions you have an excellent and useful section on table football, as played with coins. Is paper football strictly an American pastime? Im not sure I could have gotten through the fourth grade without it.

Iggulden: I like knowing the details of battles, so Gettysburg and the Alamo had to go in, along with the Gettysburg address, stickball, state capitals, U.S. mountains, American trees, insects, U.S. historical timelines, and a lot of others. Navajo code talkers of WWII is a great chapter. It probably helps that I am a huge fan of America. It was only while rewriting for the U.S. that I realized how many positive references there already are. You have NASA and NASA trumps almost anything.

As for paper football, ever since I thought of putting the book together, people keep saying things like You have rockets in there, yes? Everyone loves rockets! Paper football is the first American one, but there will be many others. No book in the world is long enough to put them all in–unless we do a sequel, of course.

Amazon.com: Do you think The Dangerous Book for Boys is being read by actual boys, or only by nostalgic adults? Have you seen boys getting up from their Xboxes to go outside and perform first aid or tan animal skins or build go-carts?

Iggulden: Ive had a lot of emails and letters from boys who loved the book–as well as fathers. Ive had responses from kids as young as ten and an old man of 87, who pointed out a problem with the shadow stick that weve since changed. The thing to remember is that we may be older and more cynical every year, but boys simply arent. If they are given the chance to make a go-cart with their dad, they jump at it. Mine did. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to know the book is being used with fathers and sons together, trying things out. Nothing is more valuable to a boy than time with his dad, learning something fun–or something difficult. Thats part of the attitude too. If its hard, you dont make it easy, you grab it by the throat and hang on for as long as it takes.

The book is often bought by fathers, of course. Their sons dont know Scott of the Antarctic is a great adventure story. How could they if it isnt taught any more? Good, heroic stories dont appear much in modern school curriculums–and then we wonder why boys dont seem interested.

Amazon.com: And finally, on to the important questions: Should Pluto still be a planet? And what was the best dinosaur?

Iggulden: Pluto is a planet. I know

Total Time Saver
As other reviewers have noted, this guide does contain a complete reprint of the original game guide. However, having owned the original guide, there is one MAJOR difference. The University Guide has an INDEX. So if you share my frustration of constantly flipping through guides searching for a topic, this is definitely worth the money. The game is time-consuming enough without having to spend time searching through the guides. So even if you don’t own the University Expansion Pack, I recommend purchasing this item if only to make the original guide easier to use and the information more accessible.

You need this if you want to get the most out of your game
There are things in the game that you just can’t figure out on your own. This book will show you everything.

Pancakes, Pancakes! by Eric Carle
From Publishers Weekly
As portrayed in Carles familiar, colorful collages, cornflakes just wont do for a determined lad who goes to great lengths to procure his favorite breakfast. Ages 3-7.
Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Why Buy A Pancakes, Pancakes! by Eric Carle?
The barnyard rooster crows and Jack wakes up — hungry, of course! What does he want for breakfast? A big pancake! But first, Jacks mother needs flour from the mill, an egg from the black hen, milk from the spotted cow, butter churned from fresh cream, and firewood for the stove. Will Jack ever get his pancake?

With his trademark vibrant collage illustrations and a lively text, Eric Carle has created a mouthwatering tale for young readers.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Daughter Addicted to the Book
My daughter is 18 years old now and still says this was the best book she ever had. When she was a preschooler, I got to the point where I hid the book because she asked me to read it to her every night. She believes that the artwork was mesmerizing and the story was secondary. Other Carle books didn’t hold her interest.

Eric Carle fan!
My goal is to acquire every Eric Carle book for my son! We love the Pancake story! This one is for a bit older audience then the bug books.

Jungle Colors (The Backyardigans) by Nancy Parent

Jungle Colors (The Backyardigans) by Nancy Parent
Why Buy A Jungle Colors (The Backyardigans) by Nancy Parent?
Join the Backyardigans on their colorful jungle adventure!

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Cute book
I have a six month old and she very mnuch enjoys this book. I know it will help her learn colors. We are huge backyardigans fans!

Backyardigans Rule
My grandson loves anything backyardigans so I had to buy this book. It’s small enough to fit in a diaper bag very colorful and there are enough details in the pictures that you can sit and point things out. Great for when you are stuck waiting someplace.

A Colorful Adventure
Jungle Colors, feauring the Backyardigans, is a fun adventure. The Backyardigans explore the jungle, and the colors brown, purple, blue, white, yellow, green, black, orange, pink, red and gray. The book is well made and sturdy, a fun read for both adult and child.

Excellent
This book is great for teaching kids about colors. My 2 year old loves it and after only 2 weeks of reading this book at bed time, she is starting to recite the story with me as I read it. Yes, we read this book every night. I wish she would mix it up some, but it is one of her top 3 books right now.

A Truly Colorful Backyardigans Adventure
“Jungle Colors” is a simple but fun board-book featuring your backyard friends, The Backyardigans. In this book, the Backyardigans are on a jungle adventure, much like some of the ones seen on TV. But this jungle adventure is especially colorful. They encounter various colors as they make their journey, from brown to fabulous red rubies.

The colors are bright and cheerful. The illustrations go well with the fairly simply text. A nice book for basic learning about colors or for Backyardigans fans. This is a “Super Chubby” board-book by Simon Spotlight. That means that the front and back covers have a sort of squishy feel to them and the book won’t easily slip out of little kids’ hands.

Toymaking With Children by Freya Jaffke

Toymaking With Children by Freya Jaffke
Review
One of the simplest, clearest, and most essential books on toys and play that I have ever read. — The Peridot This greatly expanded edition is an excellent handbook with plenty of ideas for teachers and the parents of young children. — Kindling, the Journal for Steiner Waldorf Early Childhood, Spring/Summer 2003. Freya Jaffke managed to breathe her many years experience as a master Waldorf kindergarten teacher into a volume capable of inspiring, guiding and reassuring new parents toward a balanced, beautiful life with their children. This is a hands-on approach that is deeply suited to working with and understanding young children. This is a book to enjoy in the deepest sense of the word, and makes an excellent companion to Work and Play in Early Childhood. The new edition adds colour photographs, more toys to make (more joy to bring!), and wonderful discussions of which toys to give to children at what ages, how to create a beautiful, nurturing environment, even tips for clean-up! I have loved this book since it was first published — this most recent incarnation elevates it from wonderful to must have. — Bob and Nancys Bookshop (www waldorfbooks.com)

Why Buy A Toymaking With Children by Freya Jaffke?
The toys that surround children during their first five years are essential tools for awakening imaginations and creativity. From many years of experience as a kindergarten teacher, Freya Jaffke makes helpful suggestions for adults who wish to select age-appropriate toys for children. She also shows how to make a variety of toys. There are sections on the meaning of play, stages of play, outdoor play, and how to help children play.

This greatly expanded edition is an excellent handbook for all parents of young children.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Not just toymaking plans!
I recieved this book and really couldn’t be more pleased! It begins by describing the purpose of play, and shows us how to best implement positive play in children’s lives. It lists some toys that are appropriate for each age group and goes on to describe how to make a number of toys. The ideas i found to be very enlightening, and I so look forward to making some of these wonderful toys! Oh and this book has a waldorf slant to it. An excellent find!

Awesome book
This is a really great book on how to mkae simple, and some not so simple toys for children. Most of them are just beautiful as well.

Directions for Waldorf-style toys and more…
This book is a revised and expanded edition of the original book titled “Making Soft Toys” which was published in 1981. The author is a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher. This book discusses the importance of play as seen through a Waldorf education perspective and explains that natural playthings from nature and toys made from natural products are important. The book opens with several essays on the subject of the value of play and the nature of (appropriate) play as seen through the eyes of a Waldorf educator. Simple toys that allow imaginative and creative play are defined as ideal and appropriate for the proper development of the child. The author states that toys made by hand are more appreciated by children and she urges parents to make toys by hand, with the child’s help or the child watching. A listing of toys appropriate for different age groups is listed. Discussion about outdoor play, play with dolls, and clean up time is included. Full instructions for over 45 toys are provided. Toys include dolls and doll clothing, knitted animals, wooden playstands and cloths, wooden tree blocks, and carved wooden toys (bridges, animals, spoons, etc.). Using wool roving is explained and instructions for creating pictures with plant-dyed wool end the book. The book is 93 pages long and the instructions are detailed and illustrated with line drawings. If you enjoy crafts and want to make Waldorf-style toys, this book is a must and a good value. Of course you can buy many of these toys already made, but you would save a lot of money by making these yourself.

The Gnome Craft Book by Petra Berger

The Gnome Craft Book by Petra Berger

The Gnome Craft Book by Petra Berger
Why Buy A The Gnome Craft Book by Petra Berger?
Gnome crafts offer a wealth of possibilities for activities with children, appealing to their imagination in a vivid and entertaining manner. Thomas and Petra Berger show how to make gnomes out of walnuts, twigs, wool and paper, as well as from a variety of other media. There are plenty of different types of gnome to keep children amused for hours. Any of the characters in the book would be at home on a seasonal nature table.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

You need a Gnome in your home!
This would be a terrific book for a grandmother or older sister to use with little kids, particularly if the kids like stories about elves or gnomes.

The book has instructions and patterns for a variety of gnomes in several different sizes and styles. Most are made of felt with the addition of nuts, beads, pipecleaners and other easily found craft supplies.

Many of the projects could be completed by a 6-7 year old with some help from an adult or teen. Younger kids could help by finding feathers, nuts, seeds, etc to be used to trim the gnomes somebody else makes.

This book will enable Children to produce really nice projects to use for decorations or gifts. Turn off the TV and the computer and spend an evening making gnomes. You will find that it is truely magic!

Wholesome and satisfying
The designs in this book are easy to follow, and fun to make. Great pictures, nice format, and inspiring ideas for the beginning to expert crafter. Also recommended is “Feltcraft”, which displays a wide array of other felt toys and crafts.

I am totally satisfied with this purchase.

The Nature Corner: Celebrating the Years Cycle with a Seasonal Tableau by J. Moeskops

The Nature Corner: Celebrating the Years Cycle with a Seasonal Tableau by J. Moeskops
Why Buy A The Nature Corner: Celebrating the Years Cycle with a Seasonal Tableau by J. Moeskops?
Seasonal nature tables are an invaluable way of making young children aware of the changing cycle of the year.

With simple materials and basic knitting and crocheting skills, a series of colorful and effective tableaux can be made at home or in school for depicting the seasons and major festivals.

Illustrated, with many in full color.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Creatively sharing nature’s changes with children.
This book is excellent for the parent or teacher looking for a way to use simple materials and objects found in nature to create little scenes celebrating the seasonal changes and holidays. Beautifully illustrated with very clear instructions and complete patterns, this book encourages a return to genuine imaginative creativity and an awareness of natural beauty.

essential for Waldorf homeschoolers
This little book is a real must-have if you’re setting up a Waldorf environment in your home. Tons of ideas for Nature tables in each season of the year, wonderful full-color pictures, and patterns and directions to make your own creations. The book covers basic techniques including how to make a Waldorf doll head, and is divided into 11 Nature table scenes for all times in the year. The Table of Contents is set up as follows:

Introduction

Basic Techniques

Early Spring

Spring

Easter

Ascension and Whitsun

St. John’s Tide

Summer

Autumn

Halloween and Martinmas

Advent

Christmas

Winter

I especially love the Winter tableau with King Winter and Mrs. Thaw. All parts of this book are inspirational and, even if I haven’t been able to follow all the patterns, it’s because of my meager knitting and crochet skills — not the fault of the author! If you’re a crafty person you’ll find this book easier to use than a complete novice would. But the photography of the seasonal table alone is enough to justify buying this book! Although the Nature table is discussed in Earthways and All Year Round, this book goes much farther and I turn to it often. A necessary addition to your Waldorf library.

Bringing Crafts and Nature Together
What a wonderful little book! It’s packed with seasonal table ideas and instructions for making the dolls, animals and other craft suggestions. The color photographs are inspiring. After buying this book, I immediately set out to make Mother Earth and the Earth Babies. My daughter is now a preteen, but she still enjoys having these special touches in our home. She rarely adds to the scenes anymore, but having a bit of nature around the house is comforting. During this time of growth and change, she outwardly denies her interest in such “babyish” traditions, but if I try to alter our traditions, she voices her disappointment. I think long after she’s moved on, I’ll continue to set up a seasonal table — just for me! For anyone interested in starting a Seasonal Table or if you want new ideas, consider adding this gem to your craft library.
