Great Book
We bought this book for our 3-year old as an alternative to her usually favorite princess and fairy stories, and she loves it! There are stories from different cultures, and she loves picking stories from the map on the inside cover. The artwork is also beautiful.

best book
I bought the book and my kids love it. They like to learn about fairy tales from other countries and they can read them and discuss among themselves and compare to fairy tales from the US

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Great birthday gift!
This book makes a great gift. My son received this book for his first birthday and we have made a tradition to read it to each of my kids on their birthdays each year. It captures the essence of childhood and their wonderful imaginations.

[...]

Perennial-Annual Favorite Seuss
From the early morning wakeup by the Birthday Bird and special Katroo birthday aso-see-eye-ation handshake to being flown home asleep from the “Birthday Pal-alace” on a soft pillowed platter, this special day story delights readers young and old. From as far back as I remember this was my main birthday treat, and then years later I enjoyed reading it to all my children as much as they loved hearing it (and then having it read to me! when they could do the honors). This is the good Doctor at his best - great story, fine graphics, wonderful rhymes! (I’m amazed anyone would have a spare copy to sell as used….)

A vibrant, lavish celebration of birthday and the uniqueness of each of us
My children—ages three and five—request this book over and over all through the year and quote it on numerous occasions. It’s one that I truly don’t mind reading over and over as well. The incredibly colorful illustrations are fantastical and yet the small, wondering boy who experiences all these grand events somehow keeps them almost believable. My favorite part is when the birthday boy stands atop a mountain and shouts, “I am me! I am I! I may not know why but I know that I like it.” It teaches children to celebrate their special individual quality without being selfish about it. The book is simply overflowing with a sense of love and nurturing without being maudlin in the least.

Best Yet
My grandson says this book was the “best yet” it made his Birthday

the best. Thanks.

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (Beginner Books(R)) By Dr. Seuss

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (Beginner Books(R)) By Dr. Seuss
Why Buy A One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (Beginner Books(R)) By Dr. Seuss?
Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head? Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor Dr. Seuss Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seusss intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the books original publication in 1960–so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! (Ages 4 to 8)

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Wonderfully Funny!
This book is SO funny. I thought it was only about the fish but as I read it to my 4 month old, I found out that it is a bunch of little stories. I love this book and I hope that she will love it when she can understand better.

You’ll be rhyming in your sleep
This book, as is the case with all of Dr. Seuss’ books, is a delight. I have warm memories of these books being read to me by my parents as a child. It was wonderful to follow along by watching the inspired illustrations.

This book might just turn your child into a poet. Even if it doesn’t do that, it will teach your child to rhyme. The rhymes are magically witty and whimsical. Be forewarned. Both you and your child may be reciting rhymes in your sleep.

Dr. Seuss stimulated my imagination as a child. As an author with a gift for humor, he has undoubtedly molded me as an author of humorous adult books. For that, I am grateful.

Davis Aujourd’hui, author of “The Misadventures of Sister Mary Olga Fortitude”

Great Book
This is an amazing book for children. Dr. Seuss books are always a must!

As American as Apple Pie
Dr. Seuss published over 60 children’s books, which were often characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of trisyllabic meter. His most celebrated books include the bestselling Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat and this book are just amazing and should be read by all children.

Speech and Language Processing: An Introduction to Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistics and Speech Recognition (Prentice Hall Series in Artificial Intelligence) by James H. Martin

Speech and Language Processing: An Introduction to Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistics and Speech Recognition (Prentice Hall Series in Artificial Intelligence) by James H. Martin
Review
… ideal for … linguists who want to learn more about computational modeling and techniques in language processing; computer scientists building language applications who want to learn more about the linguistic underpinnings of the field; speech technologists who want to learn more about language understanding, semantics and discourse; and all those wanting to learn more about speech processing. For instructors … this book is a dream. It covers virtually every aspect of NLP… Whats truly astounding is that the book covers such a broad range of topics, while giving the reader the depth to understand and make use of the concepts, algorithms and techniques that are presented… ideal as a course textbook for advanced undergraduates, as well as graduate students and researchers in the field. — Johanna Moore, University of Edinburgh

Speech and Language Processing is a comprehensive, reader-friendly, and up-to-date guide to computational linguistics, covering both statistical and symbolic methods and their application. It will appeal both to senior undergraduate students, who will find it neither too technical nor too simplistic, and to researchers, who will find it to be a helpful guide to the newly established techniques of a rapidly growing research field. — Graeme Hirst, University of Toronto

This book is an absolute necessity for instructors at all levels, as well as an indispensable reference for researchers. Introducing NLP, computational linguistics, and speech recognition comprehensively in a single book is an ambitious enterprise. The authors have managed it admirably, paying careful attention to traditional foundations, relating recent developments and trends to those foundations, and tying it all together with insight and humor. Remarkable. — Philip Resnik, University of Maryland

This is quite simply the most complete introduction to natural language and speech technology ever written. Virtually every topic in the field is covered, in a prose style that is both clear and engaging. The discussion is linguistically informed, and strikes a nice balance between theoretical computational models, and practical applications. It is an extremely impressive achievement. — Richard Sproat, AT&T Labs — Research

Why Buy A Speech and Language Processing: An Introduction to Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistics and Speech Recognition (Prentice Hall Series in Artificial Intelligence) by James H. Martin?
This book takes an empirical approach to language processing, based on applying statistical and other machine-learning algorithms to large corpora.Methodology boxes are included in each chapter. Each chapter is built around one or more worked examples to demonstrate the main idea of the chapter. Covers the fundamental algorithms of various fields, whether originally proposed for spoken or written language to demonstrate how the same algorithm can be used for speech recognition and word-sense disambiguation. Emphasis on web and other practical applications. Emphasis on scientific evaluation. Useful as a reference for professionals in any of the areas of speech and language processing.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Big improvement over the first edition
As its lengthy subtitle suggests, this is a big book (just under a thousand pages) and unbelievably comprehensive. On the whole, the book is a major improvement over its predecessor. The first edition was plagued with typos on seemingly every page, and was also way too thin in certain places. I seem to remember them rushing through phonetics in a single page or two, and then describing optimality theory in just a couple sentences! The second edition’s coverage of the field is significantly broader and deeper. Phonetics now gets a good 15 pages. The typos are gone and the appearance of the book is also much improved, with nice-looking black-and-white diagrams on nearly every page.

I have one pedagogical quibble with the new edition. The first edition introduced readers to the Bayesian noisy channel model by applying it to the problem of spelling correction, as implemented in the classic paper by Kernighan et al. Because noisy channel spelling correction is so fiendishly simple, and the paper is so readable, this was the perfect way to introduce a student to Bayesian models of language. In the second edition, however, the authors decided to jump straight into noisy channel POS tagging, a much more challenging topic, and to relegate spelling correction to an “Advanced” (?) section at the end of Chapter 5. They really should have started with spelling correction and then moved to tagging.

Quibbles aside, this book is a spectacular achievement. The first edition of Speech and Language Processing was a breathtaking synthesis of material, and it helped to unify the field of language technology, despite its flaws. This greatly updated second edition is a big improvement and will be the standard text in the field for years to come.

Great introductions and reference book
I read the first edition of that book and it is terrific. The second edition is much more adapted to current research. Statistical methods in NLP are more detailed and some syntax-based approaches are presented. My specific interest is in machine translation and dialogue systems. Both chapters are extensively rewritten and much more elaborated. I believe this book is perfect for everyone who starts in speech and language processing. With precision, coherent examples and some humor, this book give a great introduction into this topic as well as material for already experienced readers.

Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas: Further, Further Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison

Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas: Further, Further Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison
From School Library Journal
Grade 8-10-The irreverent voice of Georgia Nicolson is loud and clear in this latest installment from Rennison. Now she is officially the Girlfriend of a Sex God, and as she tries to settle into that role, she discovers that life is still no less confusing. After snogging an old flame, her fidelity might waver. Georgia is a fully fleshed out 15-year-old, preoccupied with herself, impatient with her father and all other authority figures, and mercurial in her attitudes. In other words, shes a girl filled with the insecurities that define adolescence. Readers are usually on her side even though her sensitivity toward others is often lacking. She is most consistently warm toward her little sister, Libby, and this relationship adds a pleasant dimension to her character. There are laugh-out-loud moments and her creative language throughout brings her diary to life. However, her repeated glib comments about lesbianism are unfortunate and unnecessary. Though they may be intended to add humor and honesty to the character and are perhaps reflective of attitudes characteristic of the age group, they do not serve the audience well. This point aside, the novel will no doubt find a wide readership. Rennison once again begins with an explanatory note to her American chums, and appends a glossary to help them understand some of the British colloquial expressions and Georgias unique vocabulary. While not much happens in this volume, it seems obvious that further episodes will follow.

Why Buy A Knocked Out by My Nunga-Nungas: Further, Further Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison?

As I was going out of my bedroom door I remembered my nungas. Perhaps I should take some precautions to keep them under strict control. Maybe bits of Sellotape on the ends of them to keep them from doing anything alarming? Id like to trust them, but they are very unreliable.

The irrepressible heroine of the Michael L. Printz Honor Book Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging is back, and funnier than ever! Georgia has finally landed Robbie the Sex God, but hes never around, and Georgias ex, Dave the Laugh, is starting to look quite dreamy. Strangely, so does just about every other guy Georgia meets, even the new French teacher.

In this third installment of Georgias hilarious confessions, Georgias red bottomosity is out of control! Whatever will happen next?

Customer Reviews & Opinions

This Books A Knock Out!
Knocked Out By My Nunga Nunga’s is the third book in the Georgia Nicolson series. The book is dairy of a young 14 year-old girl in England. In it she talks about all the crazy adventures and obsesses over her boyfriend Robbie aka The Sex God. She also talks about normal teenage girl stuff like how insane her parents and Libby, her little sister, are. The most important thing in her life are friends that she also talks about quite often. When the book begins Georgia is in trouble and got suspended from her all girls school. This is something common for her and her friends. Personally I loved the book. The book is hilarious and since it’s in England the words can make it funnier. It’s also a good book for teenage girls because I think that we can relate to some of the things she does in the book. It makes you go “Wow! I thought I was the only one who thought that.” It’s also one of those books that your friends won’t call you a book worm if you read it because they’ll probably want to read it too! This book isn’t only for girls, I know some boys who have read it too! This book and other books in the series are some of my favorite books I’ve ever read. The author Louise Rennison really knows how to connect with the reader.

Great series…
The title of her second book caught my eye one day. “On the bright side, I’m now the girlfriend of a sex god.” The owner of the bookstore told me it was the second in a series though, and that I really should read the first one. I took a chance, and haven’t looked back. I bought the book for a late night ferry ride, and I couldn’t put the book down. Laughed my a$$ off.

I’m not a big reader, but I’ve read every one in the series!

There’s an adult version, which could be equally as good, but I’m already 6 books in on the original version, so I’m sticking with it, and think it’s more than worth the age gap between me and the main character. She’s a british teenager, and she’s hilarious!

AB FAB
I love this series, and this book is great. I hope she’s planning to write another one, but you never know, the end did have a wrapping up feeling about it, and I have to know what happens!

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
Why Buy A Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown?
Perhaps the perfect childrens bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for–or attempting to postpone–his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the quiet old lady whispering hush. Clement Hurds illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbits room.

Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity–a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbits goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a yawn or two. (Picture book)

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Every child needs this book!
I haven’t heard of one child who didn’t absolutely love this book. Make this part of your bedtime routine–it does wonders! This book could easily get destroyed by little ones because of the thin pages, so make sure you keep it safe. Kids are captivated by it–boy or girl!

Our MOST Favorite Bedtime Story
My daughter is 20 months old, she has to take this book to bed with her EVERY night.

We always read it before bed, at night or at nap time. Its become our favorite story, hands down. I highly recommend this book, i loved it as a child myself and I’ve rediscovered it through her eyes again.

The flow of the words, the illustrations, even the way in which the room becomes darker and darker from page to page… it all prepares your little one for a good nights rest. It leaves you with such a warm calm feeling. On the last page, Sophie always points out that the “bunny seepin’ ..sssshhh ni nite.”

Your child’s bedtime story collection isn’t complete without this book!!!

Create sweet memories with this book.
I have the sweetest memories of my (now grown) children sitting in my lap as we read this at bedtime. They each enjoyed trying to spot the mouse and the items mentioned on each page. Don’t just softly read it to them but also let them interact with it by asking them, “Where’s the mouse?”, or “Where are the mittens?”. This book is always included in my baby gifts to friends and family to get them off to a good start to a lifetime love of reading and to create sweet times together.

My Trip to Alpha 1 by Alfred Slote

My Trip to Alpha 1 by Alfred Slote
Why Buy A My Trip to Alpha 1 by Alfred Slote?
Traveling by VOYA-CODE, it takes Jack only a few seconds to get to the planet where his aunt lives, six million light years away. Jack has gone to Alpha I to help his aunt move to earth. Aunt Katherine is acting strangely, not like herself at all. And Frank and Ruth Arbo, the couple who manage her fantastically wealthy mining company, seem downright sinister. Something is very wrong on Alpha I — and its up to Jack to set things right.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Trip to the Future
Here’s the booktalk I used in presenting this to students: Jack was making his first trip by Voya-Code from earth to the Planet Alpha I. It was 6 million light years away, but the trip would only take a few seconds by Voya-Code. It seemed more like going to the hospital than going on a trip. First you are wired up to the computer and then given a shot. When you woke up, you’re there. At least your personality and mind are there. Your body stayed behind on the old planet in sleep storage until you returned.

On the new planet, you have an identical body, a dummy, to use until you return. All went well with his trip, but when he arrived at Alpha I, Jack discovered that strange things were happening there.

Jack’s No Dummy
Jack lives on Earth, but he is going to visit his aunt on planet Alpha I. He’ll travel there in only a few seconds by “voya-code.” His identical-looking dummy on Alpha I will “come to life” as a result of a computer input, and his real body will “sleep” until the code of his real self is programmed back into it.

Well, anyway, Jack discovers that this aunt, who’s supposed to be real, is a dummy. But why? And how can he foil the masters of his aunt?

Dont Feed the Monster on Tuesdays!: The Childrens Self-Esteem Book by Adolph Moser

Dont Feed the Monster on Tuesdays!: The Childrens Self-Esteem Book by Adolph Moser
Why Buy A Dont Feed the Monster on Tuesdays!: The Childrens Self-Esteem Book by Adolph Moser?
Discusses how to develop and maintain healthy self-esteem and a positive attitude.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Excellent book helps kids understand their own self-esteem
My daughter found this book at school and requested it so many times that I finally bought it for her. Basically it introduces cognitive behavior therapy in a friendly way that kids can understand.

It takes all those tangled up thoughts that run through a persons head about how one feels about oneself and calls that “the monster.” The monster wants to eat away your self esteem until you are very small and he is very big. He gets fed when you believe the lies that he whispers to you “You’re no good” “you’re dumb” “she doesn’t really like you”. So set aside a day and try all day to avoid feeding the monster. if he whispers bad things to you, tell him “STOP” and tell yourself something nice instead. If the monster doesn’t get fed, he grows smaller.

I highly recommend this book to kids and adults who feel like they are always doing the wrong thing and feeling really down about themselves.

DON’T FEED THE MONSTER!

Must have for working thru Self Esteem Issues
bought this series to help my out of control 5 year old to gain some emotional control. We have used all the books in the series and I am amazed the strides that we have made in the last two years since I purchased this series! Yes all kids have various problems but these books cover the real life scenarios that kids might encounter in words that they can understand. I would give this series 10 Stars if it was possible!

Lifesavers for sure!

Amazing Book!
I can’t get over how incredible this book is! I was excited by the titles and reviews but wasn’t sure how it would be received by my kids. They were rivoted by the book (my intonations helped a bit ;) and as soon as we finished we did some great role-playing of what makes the monster grow and shrink. I’m so happy - what a great tool to refer to in our everyday conversations! THANK YOU authors!

Excellent book for child low self esteem
This has been great for a child with Autism struggling with self esteem issues. The kids like pointing out when the other is “feeding the monster” with their words or actions. It came highly recommended to me and I share the feeling!

Don’t Feed the Monster on Tuesday!
This book was the first we learned about in this series and it’s terrific! Excellent book(s) for children and families dealing with anger-management and strong emotions. It’s a great book children can read on their own, have it read to them as well as an excellent book for families to read together. A must have book and must have series!

When We Went to the Zoo by Jan Ormerod

When We Went to the Zoo by Jan Ormerod
From Publishers Weekly
A familys tour of the zoo provides a rich vehicle for Ormerods precise, delicate art. Her animals are intricately drawn and alluring without being cute, and the borders and boxes with which she divides her spreads create the subtle illusion that, along with the family in the story, readers are looking into cages or fish tanks, through fences or across a moat. Ormerod ( The Frog Prince ; Sunshine ) is a keen observer of fine, telling detail. By focusing on a pelicans yawn, or picking out, amidst the pageant of showy zoo animals, a pair of sparrows building their nest, she helps draw attention to small but significant moments that are worthy of celebration but might easily go unnoticed. Ages 4-8.
Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2– A young boy and girl recount the sights they see during a visit to the zoo. The excitement of watching the sea lions being fed, of touching a boa constrictor, and of riding a camel is surpassed when the children and their father spy a sparrow flying to its hidden nest near the zoo exit. Once again, Ormerod has taken a common childhood experience and turned it into a celebration. Her text is a straightforward listing of the childrens activities, loosely rhymed on occasion. As usual, its her illustrations that lift the book above the ordinary. Colorful line-and-wash pictures show the animals with realism and dignity; they are striking and appealing figures without being presented as either majestic or adorable. Ormerods familiar panel layout is especially effective here. Readers are able to view a central scene while observing the animals movements or seeing what is happening around the main activity. This is a visual delight and a true animal appreciation book. Those looking for information about zoos for this age level should consider Gail Gibbonss Zoo (Crowell, 1987) or Judith Rinards What Happens at the Zoo (National Geographic, 1984; o.p.). –Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI

Why Buy A When We Went to the Zoo by Jan Ormerod?
When Jan Ormerod takes a family to the zoo, they sing hi-de-hi-de-ho, the elephant is so slow. They see a pelican yawn. They laugh at an orangutan in a paper bag. But in the end, what they like best isnt a zoo animal at all. Its the simple, special sight of sparrows building a nest. The glowing illustrations make a trip to the zoo something to be remembered. Why Buy A The Amazing Story of Creation: From Science and the Bible by D. Dish?
The evidence of creation presented here is entertaining, educational and easy to understand. At times, it presents a humorous look at the predicament in which evolution finds itself trying to explain that which only God can do.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

One of the best in showing with God there is no prejudice
I have had multiple copies of this book for over 20 years and have given many as gifts. It is marvelous in showing how Adam and Eve were multi-genetic and how all the races could come from just two individuals. It covers other areas of creation (plants, dinosaurs, etc.) but learning about the multi-genetics of our forefathers was the most profound for me. God clearly does not make mistakes and planed all the people in this world to be of all colors from the beginning (just like flowers and animals are). It does not get unnecessarily complicated and mind-boggling — it is clearly written and very easy to read so children and adults both can understand it.
