Customer Reviews & Opinions

I am sold!
We got this set of DVDs and flashcards as a gift. Started my son on the starter DVD at 11 months - about every other day. He was very interested in the DVDs but it didn’t seem like he was “learning” anything so I stopped showing him the DVDs after a few months. One day when he was around 14 months, he found the flashcard for “hi” in a drawer and brought it to me and said “hi.” I was flabbergasted. So we started the DVDs again and he began learning the words in earnest around 16 months. By age 17 months I made more flashcards for him because he had already learned all the ones provided in the kit. He watches the DVDs about every other day or every two days. So far he has only seen the starter and #1.

This is a system of word memorization - the child is basically memorizing the shape of the word. I have noticed that even if my son doesn’t recognize a new word, he does make guesses at the word which contain some of the right sounds. So over time, I am assuming he’ll make the connections to be able to read phonetically. There are portions of the DVDs that go through phonics.

His success at “reading” through this system has been dependent on the flashcards and parent interaction. When I go through the flashcards, I point out the letters and sounds. I don’t think that you can reasonably expect a child to learn from the DVD alone.

My husband calls this a “parlor trick” and in a way, that is a true. But it is exciting to see our son reading and even more enjoyable to see him develop a keen interest in learning. He points to the cards now because he wants to go through them with me.

Extremely Skeptical - Pleasantly Surprised
We bought this for our nearly 1 and nearly 2 year old sons and are extremely pleased with the results after having used the system for six weeks. The youngest son has started reacting to the visual sight of certain words (e.g. “CLAP” and he starts clapping). The oldest has gone from barely speaking to talking about everything.

One thing we worried about is how some families plan their days to fit this into their schedule. We stumbled on the idea of setting a small computer up where the kids eat their meals. Breakfast and lunch are casual at our place and this works great for us.

Other things we would have wanted to know: [1] Consistency pays off. Your kids may not watch it every time directly - our kids didn’t always pay rapt attention - but you need to keep it going. [2] We appreciate the comments of those that say you shouldn’t let the TV raise your kids. We use the DVDs as an opportunity to be creative and fun, playing off the materials they are learning. [3] Use the other materials too. Reading with your kids and using the other materials in the set greatly increases their ability to learn. We had to commit to this as part of buying this set. [4] We feel that of all the toys, furniture, and other things we’ve bought for these kids, that this is among the best money spent. [5] The video production could have been slightly better, but the kids don’t mind. They are learning like crazy. [6] Those with kids this young will appreciate knowing that the DVDs keep both our young kids entertained. [7] Take the time to read the small booklet that comes with the set if you are going to use this. [8] Visit their website and read some of the materials there too. That helped us. Good luck with your decision!

Cupcake Delights Note Cards

Cupcake Delights Note Cards
Why Buy A Cupcake Delights Note Cards?
Send a sweet thought on our deliciously playful die-cut cupcake note cards. Four fresh designs make perfect birthday cards, but are tempting enough to send on any occassion.

16 cards, 4 designs, 17 envelopes, 4 3/8 x 5 7/8 inches

Customer Reviews & Opinions

one of the best notecards Ive ever bought!!! YAY!!!
These are high quality colorful unisex cards you will be proud to send!!! They are just the right size for birthday, thank you and even party invitations. I have spent countless hours browsing stationary stores/Walmart/Target/Barnes and Nobles/Ross and this is definitely 1 of the better sets out there. However … the envelopes (all yellow) have //obvious// white splotches (which can be covered with stickers) which seems to be the result of not enough yellow ink. Ive seen this sort of printing problem in cheap dollar store stationary but this costs $12 so was disappointed. If the envelopes were better, I would save my pennies to buy another box because they are so cute and fun. Cant wait to use them and I know the recipient will be happy with this sweet surprise in their mailbox :)

Halloween: Romantic Art and Customs of Yesteryear Postcard Book

Halloween: Romantic Art and Customs of Yesteryear Postcard Book
Why Buy A Halloween: Romantic Art and Customs of Yesteryear Postcard Book?
Taken from the book of the same title is a selection of the images of Halloween as celebrated in the early twentieth century, when it was a romantic holiday, a time for soothsaying traditions in love and luck. The years from 1900 to 1918 are considered the Golden Age of Postcards — a time when lavishly designed and printed cards were exchanged at every available occasion. Halloween cards were extremely popular, full of all the vivid imagery of the occasion, and are highly sought-after collectors items today. These beautifully illustrated postcards capture the essence of the romantic art and customs of yesteryear and are a delightful commemoration of Americas fastest-growing holiday: Halloween.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Title confusing - but charming collection
I see from a previous review that the title of this collection is confusing since it seems to indicate that there is information on Halloween customs in the book…I think this is arising from the fact that this is a companion book to the ACTUAL book (by the same author) called “Romantic Art and Customs of Yesteryear”. If you take this one as an extention of that book (to give people the art as a separate, usable item) it makes more sense. I love it as the little vintage window it is.

Romantic Halloween Postcards
These postcards are really neat! I wanted to tear them out and put them up for Halloween, but I couldn’t bear to take the book apart (call it librarian syndrome). The images really got me interested in the history of Halloween and even inspired me to do some vintage looking Halloween crafts. I want to get the book by the same author that explains the significance of the images.

Vintage Halloween is Great!
Vintage Halloween is so much better than our unimaginative Halloween. Commercial isn’t the problem, it was commercial back then, as well. It was just more imaginative. None of the cards that they sell for Halloween can compare to these.

Great!
This book provides terrific postcards from “back in the day” (WAY back). These can be used as is or to give one inspiration. Lots of fun any way you use them.

Why Buy A The Halloween Tarot?
Follow the black cat through the Halloween Tarot! The artwork conjures up all thats fun about Halloween. The Minor Arcana suits are Pumpkins, Imps, Ghosts, and Bats.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

It’s the most fun tarot deck - ever!!
This is my favorite deck. I have had mine since it first came out and I will use no other (unless I can’t find mine). This deck is extremely well designed as it incorporates all of the major symbolism of the [original - for mass public consumption] Waite deck with fun, happy characters that bring the deck to life. The black cat is your guide throughout the deck (so be sure to find him in each picture) and he interacts with each inhabitant of each scene in turn. The suits are faithfully represented, although here they are pumpkins :-) bats :-) imps :-) and ghosts :-D who are arguably the cutest of all. The whole deck is so steeped in fun that it is simply impossible to give a “bad” reading, assuming that you have been practicing.

This deck is one of the few that can be used as a starter deck (due to its ease of accessibility - the images are clear in meaning and easy to assimilate meaning from), a solid journeyman’s deck (it is reliable and does not interfere with your formulae, whether you fall on the side of Uncle Al or Frater Waite & Co.) and a good choice for experts and masters as it truly contains the symbolism needed for advanced divination purposes. Rarely do you come across a deck for all occasions. This is certainly one of them.

Unlike other decks that simply toss in animals or their heroes to augment th basic card layouts in a cheap attempt to cash in on the novelty of a tarot deck (please send all hate mail to: Dusty White… :-) this deck really stands on its own. I highly encourage you to take this deck for a test drive. It is very reasonably priced and very durable (it is made by U.S. Games - the premier makers of tarot decks) and will last you for years. As for my favorite card of the deck: I really love the lobster nailed to a tree. Touche Kipling!

Is this deck a Trick or a Treat?
The Halloween Tarot, 78 card tarot deck by Kipling West

Kipling West describes herself as living in a damp rainy place which may account for the wicked humor found in this Halloween themed Rider-Waite-Smith style deck. For example there is a voodoo doll in the Justice card, and the man attached to the Wheel card is holding a four leaf clover, not to mention the wonderfully ooky spooky oddities in the Temperance card kitchen! Slinking about is a curious black cat that seems to insert himself both conspicuously and inconspicuously in almost every card of the deck. From giving a mouse the stink eye in the Devil card to offering consolation in the Nine of Bats card this cat has character!

Did I say Nine of Bats? Yes I did, the suits are titled: Bats for Swords (air), Pumpkins for Pentacles (earth), Ghosts for Chalices (water), and Imps for Wands (fire). The Court cards consist of Pages, Knights, Queens and Kings and the scenes on the suit cards are RWS based. The Majors are numbered 0-21 with 0 being the Fool, 8 for Strength, and 11 for Justice.

The cards themselves are 4.8 x 2.9 inches and are printed on thin flexible card stock with a matte finish and white borders. The language on the cards is English with Roman Numerals on the Major Arcana and written numbers on the suit cards. When stacked the sides of the cards feel rough to the hand and unpleasant if you are a compulsive overhand shuffler like I am.

The back of the deck is reversible with skulls, spiders, fish bones, and black cats in colors of black and orange which gives you an immediate idea of the delights you will find when you flip the cards over.

It would take a book to describe all the wondrous details in this deck and indeed you may purchase this deck in a set with a 148 page fully illustrated book. If you choose to purchase the deck alone you will not be left in the shadows as the Little White Book included with the deck will remove the cobwebs of uncertainty. This LWB is in English and does a great job in it’s explanations of the cards and the card suits but does not offer any information on reversals or contain any new or unique spreads.

The Major Arcana card that has capture my heart the most would have to be the Tower card which shows a haunted house complete with a wrought iron fence, a gargoyle, and ghosts both in the windows and falling from the lightning struck tower.

My favorite Ace would have to be the Ace of Pentacles. This card depicts the usual hand reaching out from a cloud, however this hand holds a plastic jack-o-lantern trick or treat basket filled with goodies…and yes the black cat is oogling it.

The Page cards all sufficiently depict the youthful energy of their suits. The Knights mounts are galloping, prancing, or plodding. You guess who is riding which horse. The Queen of Pumpkins is particularly engaging and indeed the black cat thinks so too because he is nestled right next to her and I trust his judgement. The Queen of Ghosts (Chalices) has a fish tail rather than legs; I don’t believe this means that she is a cold fish. Did you know that the Loch Ness Monster has been found!! It is hanging out with the King of Ghosts who is the only King wearing a face mask which seems very appropriate given his suit.

So is this deck a Trick or a Treat? Is there a Trick to reading it? Readers familiar with RWS imagery will be able to read with this deck immediately and novices will enjoy their learning experience with the help of the well written little white book. I have enjoyed reading with this deck, it is a real treat!

Deck Only
(Although this review is about the BOX SET rather than the deck only, the observations about the cards themselves are still relevant).

“Successful Tarot readings are based on insight into what you *do* see, and whatever flashes of insight into your own life the pictures may offer you. In fact, think of yourself as the black cat that appears in every card of the Halloween deck. He is your touchstone, and travels through the deck with you as your companion.” - From the companion book

For quite some time, I’ve had my eye on The Halloween Tarot deck and book set by Kipling West (illustrator) and Karin Lee (companion book and LWB author). Although I assumed I’d be pleased when I eventually bought them, I had no idea just how thrilling it would be to actually SEE the deck!

While the outstanding cartoon-like artwork of The Halloween Tarot is colorful and clever, I wasn’t prepared for the intuitive and symbolic richness of the cards. Designing many of the cards based on Rider-Waite iconography–but tweaked and twisted to incorporate themes from Halloween, old monster movies, circus images, and the German-made “Vegetable People” that were popular Halloween toys/decorations in 1920’s America–Kipling West has given Tarot an influx of fresh perspective–while still paying homage to ancient esoteric symbolism.

As I went through the deck one card at a time, I noticed how certain phrases popped into my head–a silent commentary to the arresting depictions–and a very good sign that this is a deck that would “speak” to me.

From the terrified man strapped to the ever-turning Wheel (and the target of knife-throwing!), to the experimenting mad scientist in The Hermit–the jolly Pumpkin Man careening through paved cemetery roads in a hearse (The Chariot) to a chained Frankenstein fixed on his cement throne (The Emperor), associations both practical and divine made themselves known.

Reading the delightful illustrated 137-page companion book was more than just a treat: it provided solid, yet innovative, ways to see and interpret the cards (including upright and reversed meanings). While you *can* buy The Halloween Tarot by itself–and it *does* include a LWB by Karin Lee–the companion book found in the box set is a not-to-be-missed traveling companion through this particular deck. The LWB only provides brief meanings, and doesn’t elaborate on actual images (which is why I prefer the box set which comes with the companion book.)

The suits of the Minor Arcana are Ghosts (Cups), Imps (Wands), Bats (Swords) and Pumpkins (Coins)–and the Court Cards follow the Page, Knight, Queen, and King rendering. The whimsical orange and black card backings are fully reversible, depicting a black cat, spider, smiling skulls, bats, vines, stars, full moon, and an all-seeing eye in the center.

There is no nudity in The Halloween Tarot, nor are the images gruesome or threatening–making it a *wonderful* for deck for children. (My 8-year-old son is enraptured with both the cards and book!) But make no mistake: the light-hearted appearance of the cards belies the abundant symbolism nestled within the images, as well as the rich repository for intuitive insights.

I was blown away by a three card reading I performed with this deck, mostly because two of the cards contained specific (to me) references about a book I was reading–a direct answer to my unspoken query about my spiritual path. So if you’re tempted to think that The Halloween Tarot is only for holiday readings or as a quirky, light-weight addition to a deck collection, think again: this is a great reading deck than can also speak to weightier matters!

If you’re a huge fan of Halloween, there’s no question you’ll love this deck. However, even for those who *aren’t* rabid for this particular holiday or its accoutrements, a charming, readable deck awaits you–no matter *what* time of the year!

Must have
These are super easy to read cards, fun to look at and personally one of my very favorite decks that I own!

The most perfect Halloween Tarot ever made……
I bought this deck after spotting it in a store 10 years ago, and though I thought it might be another theme deck, it goes above and beyond that!

The colours used in this deck are so vibrant and alive. They are so refreshing. The artwork, superb and evocative. The choices for the majors are truly inspried. I just love the Star, the Tower and the Chariot! A sense of humor also runs through this deck.

It very closely follows Rider-Waite symbolism so it can be read right out of the box by anyone remotely farmiliar with that system. But she has put in some interesting twists though in that framework. The idea of changing the suits too Imps, Bats, Ghosts and Pumpkins is brilliant! And how about those vegetable people? Love it!

The book that comes in the set is a must have if you love this deck. She gives you many tidbits and facts surrounding the history of Halloween. Each card is described and her prose is charming as well. Some of her takes on the cards a different and exciting!

This is a great all around deck, the artist and writer struck just the perfect note for lovers of old time Halloween. From the images,to the colours….even the font. I read this deck all year round, and it is a firm favourite. If you love Halloween, I can assure you you will not be disappointed in this purchase! Now I wish Kipling West would make more decks!!! Connolly Tarot Deck

Connolly Tarot Deck

Connolly Tarot Deck
Why Buy A Connolly Tarot Deck?
In this popular deck, Connolly employs inspirational, uplifting imagery to tap into your subconscious.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

tarot deck
I really like these cards because they are less threatening than the other Tarot cards out there.

Beautiful and Positive deck
My husband studied with Ms. Connolly and introduced me to this deck, which I now use professionally and personally. The images are lovely and I find the symbolism clear and accessible to my clients.

Clients especially appreciate Ms. Connolly’s view of a couple of problematic cards:the “Devil” represents “Materialism”, and “Death” is “Transformation”, a much more logical, and less scary, way of interpreting the Major Arcana. The entire aspect of this deck is informed by love and the ever-present opportunity towards bettering our circumstances through knowledge and understanding.

For anyone who learned on the popular Rider-Waite deck, the transition is pretty seamless. The symbolism is especially accessible to those venturing into the Tarot from a Christian background. The cherubs and Jesus-like figure in Materialism might make one think this Tarot was carried too far from its roots, but that would be misleading. This Tarot has abundant evidence of the designer’s Kabbalah knowledge, which after all was the earth in which Christianity is rooted.

I also can’t recommend Ms. Connolly’s Tarot books highly enough. She is a clear, accessible writer with an encyclopedic knowledge of her subject.

My favorite deck!

Great for Beginers
This is one of my favorite decks. It is easy to use if youre just learning. Great art as well.

Incredibly Accurate Cards!
I read many times daily with Eileen Connolly’s Tarot Deck! They are always accurate and tremendously helpful. There are many angels scattered throughout the cards and I believe they ’stack the deck’ when I do readings!! I feel totally connected to my clients and highly intuitive because of these beautiful Tarot Cards. The clients are amazed at the accuracy evidenced through their readings. I highly recommend this angelic Tarot to readers of the Tarot for strong intuitive divination. Lori Healy-Reed http://www.angelconnectionsbylori.com

The ideal tarot deck!
These cards have most of the traditional symbolism for easy reading for those that have experience with the tarot. I find these cards to be ideal because they are large yet small enough to feel very comfortable in my hands as I shuffle them. Also they are made with quality card stock, not too flimsy and not too stiff as to make shuffling difficult. I’ve found that to be a problem with other decks but not this one. Also, the art work on these cards is the main reason I chose to buy it. The colors are so bright and vivid but not overwhelming. Looking at these cards reminds me of looking at stained glass windows with the sunlight illuminating them from behind… they really are very lovely! The author’s son was the artist on this deck and I read that he had no formal art training.. you wouldn’t know it, because these cards are beautiful! This is my favorite deck of tarot cards, and I have many decks.

I highly recommend this deck for experienced tarot readers as well as beginners just learning.

Golden Tarot Deck

Golden Tarot Deck

Golden Tarot Deck
Why Buy A Golden Tarot Deck?
Comprised of collage imagery from the European masters paintings, these Tarot cards pay tribute to artwork of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance celebrating the exploration of tarot and its artistic heritage.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

Artistic, beautiful and accurate.
This was the first tarot deck I purchased which I truly felt in tune. I think the secret to this tarot deck specifically is that it utilizes older images and artwork to create unique tarot images, thereby giving the deck the beauty of the Renaissance. The Golden Tarot will invoke the Golden Age of Elizabeth and also some darker imagery which will satisfy any Anglophile, yet there is also images which call upon the mystical traditions of alchemy and Catholic esoterica. You may easily find yourself turning to this deck before you turn to the Rider-Waite deck purely because it is much nicer to look at. The only beef is that the corresponding book doesn’t give satisfying descriptions of the cards, but most tarot readers have a small library of books on the tarot that totally make up for it.

Tarot cards made beautiful
This Tarot card deck is Beautiful with a capital B. The gold edges are special and the box it comes in is wonderful. If you want a treat along with reading Tarot cards this deck is it. Each card has interesting with appropriate artwork on it. The book that comes with the deck is informative about the artwork and the cards drawn for readings. The beauty of the deck makes it feel special each time I use the cards.

An Absolutely Beautiful Tarot Deck
The Golden Tarot, along with The Golden Botticelli Tarot deck, happen to be two of the most beautiful deck of cards, that I presently own… I love the feel of the cards, they are absolutely beautiful! I highly recommend them, especially if you like Renaissance Art!

From an Advanced Perspective
** Measurements **

The measurement information above in the listing refers to the box and not the CARDS. The cards themselves are 4.84 inches x 2.91 inches. It does not state that in the description.

So….

Box = 5.3 x 3.4 inches

Cards = 4.8 x 2.9 inches

Some of the (rare) but less than flattering reviews on these cards seem to focus on 3 things:

1) Cards are difficult to shuffle

2) Not complex enough and better for beginners

3) Muted colors

#1. Most decks are difficult to shuffle when you first get them. These cards are NOT difficult to shuffle after the warmth of your hands makes them more pliable over time. If you work with the cards at least an hour every day for a couple weeks, they will limber up. I had no difficulty shuffling from the get-go and I have fairly petite hands.

#2 For Beginners? NO, and yes. I’ve been reading with 2 primary decks for 32 years. Voyager and RWD. So, I wouldn’t call myself a beginner. After you take the time to review these cards, spend some one-on-one time with each individually, you’ll find the deeper symbolism that the eye does not at first catch. <-- that would be my advice if you are a beginner. One of the essential beauties of Tarot, is that YOUR eye finds the hidden meaning. Look for it. Don't just surface glance. The subtle, meaningful background images are very much there in this deck.

#3 Muted colors. I have to completely disagree with that. If you want to look at the cards in depth, you’ll see the colors are vibrant and also subtle, BOTH. I’ve literally held my cards up to the screen at the site below and the colors are comparable.

You can see them at ****

goldentarot dot com

I’ve also added a photo above in the “Share your own images” section, to illustrate that the cards are NOT muted in color. Hopefully the image will appear by the time this review is posted.

The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack

The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack

The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack
Review
In 1909, Arthur Edward Waite encouraged Pamela Colman Smith to produce a tarot deck with appeal to the world of art that would have significance behind the symbols, and thus make the deck more important than tarot packs previously used for centuries. The result was the unique Rider-Waite Tarot deck which has endured as the worlds most popular 78-card tarot deck. The innovative cards, including the 56 Minor Arcana, depict full scenes with figures and symbols. This featured, combined with Pamela Smiths ability to capture the subtleties of emotion and experience, has made the Rider-Waite Tarot the basis for the designs of many 20th Century packs. The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack is a facsimile edition originally printed from palates that were destroyed during the bombing of London during World War II. The deck and book set comes complete and in full-color with original Tudor Rose back design, Celtic Cross divinatory chart, and The Key to the Tarot by Arthur Waite. — Midwest Book Review

Why Buy A The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack?
Facsimile edition of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck originally printed from plates that were destroyed during the bombing of London during World War II. The deck and book set comes with the Rider-Waite Tarot deck by Pamela Colman Smith with original Tudor Rose back design, Celtic Cross divinatory chart, and The Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite.

Customer Reviews & Opinions

A Classic!
The Original Rider-Waite Tarot Pack is a very good deck. However, the book is very small–the same size as the cards. In addition, the Celtic Cross Divinatory Chart is basically a small piece of paper stating where the cards go.

The pictures in this deck are much duller than the pictures in the other Rider-Waite Deck (or what’s printed on the box, “The Rider Tarot Deck”). The pictures aren’t as crisp in “The Original Rider Waite Tarot Pack,” but for any lover of this deck it is a must. Again though, I do prefer the Rider-Waite-Smith deck that came out in the 1970s and was then called “the original.” That deck is also available on amazon and has a picture of The Magician on the box.

I do love both decks and both are probably as close to the “original” as we can hope, but perhaps this deck–even though it’s a bit duller–is the closest to the “original” as we could ever hope for.

It Works!
This is my first tarot deck. I like Tarot because it works for me! But you need a good book, and curiosity to learn. If you note down all your results it is easier to learn this magical art very fast. I have done readings to many of my friends and all of them are satisied.

Good Beginner’s Pack
Good beginner’s pack. I love the color combination and the iconography on the cards. I’m glad I picked this one to start out with! I would highly recommend it.

AMAZING…Cannot live without it!
This is an AMAZING Yoga System. A must have! Especially for beginners. This would be great for beginning teachers as well!

+ Compact and great for traveling

+ Cards are wonderful. They show pictures of the poses and on the back they give information (time, posture directions, modifications, benefits)

+ Cards list the names of each position and many picture the modifications that you can try!

+ The cards are color coded and number to create a set practice (relaxation, energize, etc) OR you can create your own sequence for you practice!!

+ The plastic card holder is WONDERFUL. You place the cards in the order you want and presto…you begin!

There are no drawbacks that I have found for this product, and that is unusual. Well worth every penny.
